Connecting Mailchimp on Clarisights

Mailchimp is one of the most widely used email marketing and automation platforms. Connecting Mailchimp to Clarisights brings your email-campaign performance — sends, opens, clicks — plus the first 24 hours of hourly timeseries data, into your reporting alongside paid and analytics channels, so you can compare email engagement to other channels in a single view.

At a glance

AuthenticationOAuth 2 (Mailchimp Marketing API)
Permissions neededThe Mailchimp user must have read access to campaigns, lists, templates, and reports for every account they want to connect
Account discoveryAutomatic — the single Mailchimp account associated with the OAuth user is offered (Mailchimp's API exposes one account per OAuth user; the account is selected by the data-center suffix on the access token)
Data freshnessReports are aggregated approximately every 3 hours after a send. Mailchimp access tokens do not expire, so the connection stays live until you revoke it.
Lookback windowDriven by Mailchimp — we sync every campaign visible to your OAuth user (subject to the rate limits below)
Backfill on connectAll campaigns visible to your OAuth user are imported on first sync. For each campaign, the first 24 hours of timeseries data is pulled at hourly granularity, and the cumulative report is recorded going forward.
TimezoneUTC for storage; campaign send times are returned by Mailchimp in UTC
CurrencyNot applicable — Mailchimp campaign reports do not carry cost

Prerequisites

  • An active Mailchimp account at mailchimp.com

  • A Mailchimp user with read access to campaigns, lists, templates, and reports for the account you want to connect

  • The ability to grant OAuth access on behalf of the Mailchimp account (for many setups, this requires owner / admin role in Mailchimp)

Steps to Connect

Step 1 — Add Mailchimp in Clarisights

In Clarisights, go to Integrations → Mailchimp → Add Account. You'll be redirected to Mailchimp to authorise the connection.

Step 2 — Sign in to Mailchimp and authorise

Enter your Mailchimp credentials and approve the OAuth consent screen. Mailchimp issues an access token that includes the data-center suffix (for example ...-us21); Clarisights stores the combined token and uses it for every subsequent API call.

⚠ OAuth redirect fails or you see a Mailchimp error page → Confirm you have the right Mailchimp role to authorise external apps. If your organisation forces SSO, complete the SSO step in the same browser before clicking Add Account in Clarisights.

Step 3 — Confirm the discovered account

After OAuth completes, Clarisights calls Mailchimp's root endpoint to read the account ID, account name, and total subscribers. The Mailchimp account is created (or matched to an existing one) and surfaced in the integrations table for you to select.

Step 4 — Select and save the account

Pick the account in the list and click Save. Clarisights immediately starts the first sync of campaigns, lists, and templates. Reports are pulled on the next scheduled run.

Verify the connection

  • Go to Integrations → Mailchimp. The connected account should show a "Connected" status with the account name and subscriber count.

  • Campaign metadata (names, subject lines, lists, templates) appears within minutes; performance metrics appear within ~3 hours after the next aggregation cycle.

  • Quick start: create a new report, add Mailchimp as the data source, and add Account · Campaign · Subject Line · MC: Emails Sent · MC: Opens · MC: Clicks · MC: Open Rate.

Limitations & known constraints

  • One Mailchimp account per OAuth user: Mailchimp's OAuth flow returns a token bound to one account (and one data-center). To onboard multiple Mailchimp accounts, complete the flow once per account.

  • No cost / spend: Mailchimp does not surface cost on campaign reports; email-channel cost has to be modelled separately if needed.

  • No Ad / Ad Group level: reporting stops at the Campaign level. List and Template are stored as Campaign dimensions, not as their own levels.

  • Hourly granularity is limited to the first 24 hours: Mailchimp returns hourly timeseries data only for the first 24 hours after send. Beyond that, Clarisights records the cumulative campaign totals on each ~3-hour aggregation cycle.

  • Campaigns without a title are skipped: drafts that have no title set in Mailchimp are not synced to Clarisights.

  • Mailchimp API rate limits: Mailchimp enforces a 10-simultaneous-connections limit per account and a 120-second per-call timeout. Large sync jobs may queue — rate-limit errors are retried automatically.

  • Mailchimp Transactional (Mandrill) is not covered: this connector is for the Marketing / Audience product. Mandrill data is not pulled.

Operating notes

  • Refresh schedule: campaigns and lists are refreshed during scheduled syncs; campaign reports are aggregated approximately every 3 hours after a send.

  • Lookback: every campaign visible to the OAuth user is imported on first sync. The first 24 hours of post-send activity is pulled hourly; thereafter, cumulative deltas are appended on each aggregation cycle.

  • Multi-account: each Mailchimp OAuth grant covers one Mailchimp account. Repeat the OAuth flow with a different Mailchimp login for each additional account.

  • Token lifetime: Mailchimp Marketing API access tokens do not expire — the connection remains live until you revoke our app from Mailchimp's connected-apps page or disable the account in Clarisights.

  • Credential rotation: if your Mailchimp user changes or the OAuth grant is revoked, click Edit Credentials on the integration and complete OAuth again.
