Integrating Data Sources to Clarisights
What are data sources on Clarisights?
You can import data into Clarisights from many places. Broadly, we classify these as either Advertising (for example Google Ads, Facebook Ads) or Analytics (for example Adjust, Google Analytics).
For many major sources we have direct API connections, and we add more every month. Direct API connections give you access to many metrics and dimensions from the source, across levels. For partners without an API integration, you have a host of other import options, like scheduled email import, Google Sheets, SFTP, BigQuery and S3.
Types of data sources
API connections
When connecting accounts for our native integrations (for example, Integrating Google Ads on Clarisights), it's a good idea to "whitelist" only the relevant dimensions and metrics, so the platform doesn't fill up with unnecessary fields. This keeps the workspace clean and clutter-free. You can enable any metric or dimension you need later with the Manage Metrics option on the integration's page (under Integrations, Manage connected channels).
When you connect your advertising and analytics accounts, Clarisights automatically imports and joins the datasets at the most granular level for all supported channels. You can also tweak configurations in supported sources such as Adjust.
You can also join data from custom sources through custom analytics, for example Acquisitions for Facebook ad campaigns stored in your data warehouse.
Custom advertising channels
With custom advertising channels, you can import "advertising data" from sources like Email, SFTP, S3 bucket, BigQuery Table and Google Sheets. You are limited to 4 dimensions and their ID fields (for example Account, Campaign, Ad Group, Ad and their IDs), but thoughtful naming conventions let you enrich this data later in Clarisights with custom dimensions.
One benefit of a custom advertising channel is that you can join other data sources, such as Adjust or Custom Analytics, on a joining key such as Campaign or Campaign ID.
Other data channels
Some custom data sources don't fit the advertising model and may live in a more local resource like a Google Sheet or BigQuery Table, for example Budgets and Targets, Orders or Data Marts.
You can integrate such data sources through POD channels on Clarisights. Thinking carefully about how the data fits with your existing data on Clarisights will help you create successful POD channels. Consider these questions:
Are there fields in my custom data that will blend with system or custom dimensions on Clarisights?
Example: if you have a
country_namecolumn in your source data and aCountrycustom dimension in Clarisights, you can either:Import
country_nameas "Country", if the values are the same in the custom dimension and your data source.Or import
country_nameas "country_name" and map the values in your data source to the values in the Country custom dimension with rules.
Should I filter the data while importing it into Clarisights? If you are sure the entire dataset isn't relevant, filtering keeps your data channel lean and the reports that use it responsive.
POD-Analytics sources
POD-Analytics sources such as POD - Google Analytics or POD - Adjust are custom instances of fields from Adjust or Google Analytics. They contain both dimensions and metrics and are not joined to any other data source. You may create these channels for specific use cases or reports. Keep these things in mind when creating POD API channels:
Have a plan for what the data source will be used for, to decide which dimensions and metrics to import.
Avoid high-cardinality dimensions as much as possible, such as Ad-level data, landing page paths and hourly data.
Consider filtering to include only the relevant data.
Keep necessary high-cardinality channels separate, so you don't slow down reports that don't need granular data.
Once you're done integrating your data channels, move on to custom dimensions to harmonize and classify your data on Clarisights.
