Using widgets in a Clarisights report

Now that you're familiar with the various building blocks of Clarisights reports, in this article we walk through using them to explore data in reports on the platform.

Widgets

Every report in Clarisights contains widgets that can be of various types. Below is an example of a timeline chart widget type that quickly allows you to change the time dimension grouping to view trends in various time buckets (days, weeks, quarters, years, etc)

Each widget has a few parameters that you can control and these are available on the top panel of every widget. Different widgets offer various ways of using dimensions and metrics to create charts.

These buttons although small allow powerful functions to be performed with data and to bring forth insights that can be presented. You may use these functions to both explore data in existing reports and also create new reports. We cover some of the basic functions below

Action buttons in widgets

  1. Dimensions & Metrics - these buttons allow you to select one or multiple primary dimensions and metrics to be used in the widget. You may choose system or custom fields. The list is categorized into the data sources selected in the report and a single group of custom dimensions or metrics. Clarisights dynamically rolls-up the metrics dat to the dimensions you've selected similar to how a pivot works in spreadsheets.

  2. Breakdowns - this button allows you to select dimensions that breakdown the information you're looking at by another dimension. It can be incredibly powerful as you can virtually use ANY dimension as a breakdown in Clarisights as long as it is compatible with the dataset being explored. Breakdowns can be used in certain types of widgets only such as the Table, PivotTable, Breakdown Chart, Stacked Chart, etc

  3. Filters - this function allows you to narrow down the scope of your analysis and the results by dimension or metrics. You can use filters to include what you need or exclude what you don't need to be visible in the widget or be a part of your analysis. Filters can take in a dimension combined with an operator and a value. Eg: Campaign contains "_RMA" would filter in only the data for Campaigns that contain "_RMA" in their name. You can also nest multiple filters in AND & OR conditions.

    Filters can be applied to the individual widget or for all the widgets in a tab by adding it to the tab level directly. They will be combined with the individual widget filters in an AND condition.

  4. Sorting - This function allows you to order your results in the widget by specific conditions. You can choose to order in ascending or descending order of a metric or alphabetic order of dimension values. You can also order breakdowns separately with a different condition set.

  5. Style - Widgets have various style options that allow you to change the size of rows in a table, configure whether to show a metric as a line or columns and control their colors in charts. They also allow changing the axes of various metrics and the scale.

  6. Date Override - This function allows you to select a different date range for that specific widget. Using the date override on a widget ignores the global date picker for that individual widget and instead uses the date provided in the override.

  7. Transform - This function makes it possible to "transform" the charts from one widget type to another. Since different widget types may require different combinations of metrics and dimensions, you may also need to adjust your metric and dimension selection to visualize the information in the new widget type.

Now that you're familiar with the various action buttons in widgets let's take a look at an example of using the table widget in Clarisights. The table widget is the most common widget type in Clarisights reports mostly due to it's versatility and because it can present a lot of information and insights in a compact form factor. Text widget

One widget type that is most different from the rest is the text widget. You can use the text widget to add different textual elements to your report such as a notes & highlights, section dividers, instructions on how to read certain reports, etc.

The text widget also supports formatting options such as headings, text colors, background colors, hyperlinks and even emojis! Use this widget to add more context to your reports and make them easier to use by anyone in the organization.
